Etched Glass Designs for Beauty and Privacy

Art Glass and Metal has been producing etched/sandblasted glass in San Diego for over 40 years. What follows is a brief description of the process, along with a few ideas for applications of sandblasted glass.

I designed and produced this wonderful cast and etched glass dolphin privacy wall along with the posts to support it. The wall creates a breathtaking visual that lends an element of privacy and beauty to the setting.

The people of coastal Orange County - including Laguna Beach - generally have a deep appreciation of the ocean and all of its inhabitants. Throughout my career as a glass artist I have designed and created many unique and functional works of architectural art that tap into this sentiment, and this cast and etched glass gate panel is a one such example.

An Etched Glass Backsplash with a Tranquil Aquatic Scene

I was commissioned to design and create this etched and deep carved glass backsplash for installation in a residence in the coastal Orange County city of Laguna Niguel.  The glass backsplash is 10 feet long by 3 feet high and is 1/2” thick tempered glass for code and safety.

An Attactive Etched Glass Bathroom Wall Divider That Evokes Stone and Water

I created this etched glass bathroom wall divider with an abstract marble look for a home in Newport Beach in coastal Orange County. The frameless glass panel is seated into a walnut base and header and is installed between the toilet and the sink area to add beauty and privacy to this bathroom.

I was commissioned by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography to create this commemorative etched glass donor plaque for the Scripps Aquarium in La Jolla California. The display honors the donors who contributed to the research vessel Bob and Betty Beyster to foster a legacy of ocean exploration for the next generation of scientists at the Institute.

Frameless etched glass entryway doors with aquatic designs

I designed these etched glass entryway doors for a home office in a beach home in Laguna Beach on the Orange County coast of southern California. At 9 feet tall and with a span of 4 feet, these frameless glass doors are eye catching to say the least.

I was recently commissioned to design and create a large commemorative etched glass plaque at The Bridges Golf Center at The Bridges Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

The plaque is to commemorate Richard C. Helmstetter of Callaway Golf fame, known by some as "The Mad Scientist of Golf". As Senior Executive Vice President of the Callaway Golf Company, Mr. Helmstetter was a principal figure in the company that revolutionized the golf world:

These beautiful Etched Glass Pelican windows were custom designed above an entryway in a Coastal San Diego home. They were designed to provide privacy for their second story living area from new homes that were developed across the street.

This Etched Glass Seahorse Makes Showers a Dreamy Experience

This client wanted an etched seahorse themed panel for a shower stall. I was given some leeway in the design, so I came up with a stylized kelp design background to flow with the seahorse.

I was honored to be commissioned to design and create this stunning etched glass seascape backsplash for a coastal home in Newport Beach in Orange County, California. Coastal Orange County has a very high percentage of gorgeous custom homes, and many home owners here appreciate fine hand made works of art that are both beautiful and functional. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to create something truly unique for this fine home.

This Shower Enclosure with Tree Branch Was a Simple Yet Challenging Project

This custom etched glass shower stall was a challenge to create something with an eye catching natural allure for a space that was predominately full of right angles. It had to complement the existing setting without looking out of place, so for this reason I chose a simple tree branch motif that would not overpower the otherwise simple yet elegant design of this bathroom.

I was recently commissioned to create an etched glass sidelight for installation in the entryway of a home in Laguna Beach, California. The client wanted an etched glass window next to their front door which would provide privacy, and they wanted it decorated with an ocean themed scene. I explained that I had some designs where I could etch the background solid for privacy and shade in the designs to provide the level of privacy they were looking for.

This etched glass veterans memorial was designed and fabricated for installation at the National Cemetery of the Pacific on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The memorial consists of etched photographs of the 33 Medal of Honor recipients who are buried there. There are 4 large warm bronze panels standing of of a metal framework.

The overall size of the piece is 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide.  Along with the 33 etched photos are the 3 Medal on Honor Medals for the Army, Navy and Air Force etched onto the large top bronze glass panel.

Huge Black Glass Photo Etching by Art Glass and Metal

I created this custom large format photo etching on black glass for a casino. The actual etched glass piece is four feet tall by fourteen feet long.

The piece is supported by 12 stainless steel standoff bases that float the glass 2-1/2 inches off of the wall behind it, with the wood frame bracketing the piece. It is by far the largest photo etching I have ever done, and the largest I have seen in general.

Jay created this masterful stationary shower stall divider panel in a home in Orange County. He created it using a combination of water jet cutting the outline and etching in the wave design by hand.
